Help children to learn word meaning
I find that children of parents who speak another language at home can often read fluently in English, but they don’t understand the meaning of the words they are reading.
It is very difficult for those children to understand comprehensions and problem solving in maths. So it’s very important the children learn word meaning to solve this reading difficulty.
One of the easiest ways is by getting a children’s picture dictionary like the Longman’s one which has a CD in it.
The children can listen to the CD as they are following the words page by page.
When the children understand the meanings of more words, they can use the Osborne “First Thousand words in English Sticker Book” and they can stick the words with their pictures in the book and they can learn the meanings of those words.
It’s also a good idea for them to hold the book above their eye-line so that they can remember the word meanings from their pictures and their spelling more easily.
